Those weren’t “cheekbone modifications” but props. And she’s being sued by the artist Orlan (who has real modifications) for appropriation on different accounts (including visuals in a video/on an albumcover etc).

I don’t find it comes across as self-confidence at all but rather the need to be seen because of insecurity. I always got the impression, especially with this campaign. Looking at the clothing, from well-constructed to mimicking and surface, these thoughts are even more substantiated.

At the time an “artist” called Silvia Ji was “en Vogue” who makes pictures with such faces and the pearly face looks very Leigh Bowery. Mugler, when it was Thierry Mugler, was always known for highly well constructed clothing, when they got the new crew and changed it to Mugler, the construction took a nosedive and it was all much more about surface and image, an image which I think always looked superficial (instead of a deeper message or authentic), as if it went from a brand with a vision and strongly entertaining theatrics (in an oldschool theatrical sense), to vapid image pushing with no substance.

Could be some combination of bullying, abuse, psychological problems, discrimination based on his lifestyle and appearance (he probably had an “alternative” look before he started getting these tattoos, also I’m sure I read somewhere he had other tattoos that he had tattooed over later), and similar factors. The things that many members of alternative subcultures can experience, even if they have a lot of social privileges like being white, male, straight, etc. I have known and read about many angry young men who suffered from problems like that and ended up with the same hatred Zombie describes.

Sadomasochism has a use outside of the BDSM “safe, sane and consensual” practice. Particularly “sadist” is used negatively against people who commit crimes, murder and torture people against their will because they get a thrill out of it.

But as a sadist I personally wouldn’t be that bothered if Gaga decided to criticize sadomasochism and BDSM because to be honest there are a lot of problematic aspects to it.

Yeah, I agree with you. Aside from the controversy about the racial elements in the song (and the fact it’s just nowhere near as musically interesting as her previous work) that’s what bothers me most about Born This Way.

Ditto. And this also bugged me the last time. It wouldn’t be that big of a deal except that it’s a continuation of a mistake that was already brought to the writer’s attention. But why am I bothering to comment here – plainly obvious that the writers don’t value the reader’s comments enough to even glance at them.

“Conversations about trans issues are for trans people, end of.” Is this simply a reaction because you are angry, or do you really mean this? If you mean it, doesn’t that risk unnecessarily erecting barriers and creating a small and confined world. If so, that, I assume, would be a real unintended consequence.
