about "The dog had no part in constructing or permitting or benefitting from or not-objecting to the construction of the plant, the construction of a reservoir holding toxic sludge, or the poor construction of this reservoir. "

- hey, this thing was built under communism, and that wasn't exactly a great time for protesting the state aluminium industry's plans (and, quite uniguely, the hungarians DID try to get rid of the system altogether as early as '56 (or, more exactly, to build something of their own and get rid of the soviets), but it ended with tanks and blood and revenge.)

so think before you speak. :P

and even if the shit were newer, given the level of corruption here (altrough i kind of heard, that your perfect, non-balcanic american politicians did speak in their respective lives with lobbyist, too...), protesting the plant could well be close to impossible.

Of course, you can always blame the people for not changing the system altogether blah-blah-blah, but then you're guilty of not ending global warming RIGHT NOW [/sarcasm]. I'm not telling that human beings have no choices, but these things tend to be complicated, and in the east, there are things like the lack of civilian (socially constructive?) imagination, which was carefully broken in the totalitarian times - and after that, we got flooded with neoliberalism.

if your hobby is telling, that everybody is guilty for enabling shitty things, then you can begin with examining your own position (and if you are american, or come from any place richer than eastern europe, then your privilege means that you're more responsible).

I think, that these things are complicated, and the catholic concept of guilt is not going to help us resolving them.

And that blaming the victim is just _disgusting_.

Okay I'll just post this here, too. (I also posted this at the current end of this thread.)

I was just making a joke about how we tend to empathize more with non-humans than with humans in some circumstances. Because most of us identify strongly with other humans, it’s much easier to face the death of a dog. Facing the death of a fellow human means facing our own mortality.

I had no idea this would provoke a whole discussion. That’s what I get for trying to make a joke on the internet, I guess. Sorry for the unintentional trolling!

The dog is covered in sludge completely. It's absorbing through its skin, its hair, it's in its eyes, mouth, ears... The seven people who died probably died the same way. Not to mention--the dog doesn't even understand what it's going to be going through. It has no chance of survival, and unless someone just puts it to sleep (unlikely) really soon, its death is going to be painful and not too quick.

So, yeah, you know, I do feel a little worse for the dog, because I know it's gonna die. I feel bad for the dude with the broom and the guy with the wheelbarrow, because I know that sludge is going to give them health problems till the end of their respective days, but I'm not looking at a signed death warrant in quite the same, very definite, way.

Chicago El -- ALL of the humans in this particular set of photos are workers using personal protective equipment. There is no direct worry related to anyone depicted in this set of photos -- EXCEPT the dog. The dog is coated in the sludge... coated in the way that KILLED several humans.

All that said, WHY can't someone express concern for one thing without expressing concern for another?! If there was a photo of a child coated in sludge and the dog photo, would you have said, "WHAT ABOUT THE DOG? YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THE DOG?!" if the someone only mentioned the child???
