Andrea W. sent in a screencap of Yahoo’s homepage a few days ago. The article, “Eight Ways the Workplace Is Getting Worse,” about annoying behavior in the office, has an accompanying picture to illustrate some of those ways:
Apparently one of the most striking ways the workplace is getting worse is that there are all those women around, fussing with their makeup all the time. I’m sure that is “annoying for some.”
Of course, women might find it annoying that not wearing makeup or appearing to meet standards of beauty (or at least try) often hurts them in the workplace (less likely to get hired, etc.), but doing it too much often makes colleagues respect them less.
NOTE: Just to clarify, I’m not saying the article itself is problematic; I just don’t see why, on the homepage, they have to illustrate the article with pictures of 3 women doing makeup, which is a very gendered activity. They could have chosen to illustrate it with images of 2 or 3 people engaging in different examples from the list, so it doesn’t seem to be saying “women are annoying!”
