Like many airlines, American Airlines has adopted a policy toward “customers requiring extra space.” Kevin Smith recently highlighted this issue when he was kicked off a Southwest flight when he didn’t buy two seats.
Here is a copy of the American Airlines policy:
While the policy initially states “we encourage,” the entire policy makes it clear they do somewhat more than “encourage” certain passengers to buy more than one seat. If there are extra empty seats on the plane, you’re probably ok. Otherwise, your options are to pay extra to fly in business or first class, where the seats are larger, or buy two seats on a later flight.
I couldn’t help but think about that when I saw this ad:
Seems a bit contradictory, or at least insensitive, to be putting out ads joking about First and Business class passengers eating so much they have to loosen their seat belts while simultaneously instituting policies that punish other people for requiring “extra space.”
