Most sociologists probably don’t read a lot of Lenin, but if you specialize in the sociology of agriculture, he’s an influential figure because he wrote about peasant agriculture and had more complex theories about rural life than Marx tended to. His arguments framed a question people are still talking about: will large-scale industrial agriculture push family farmers out of business? Or will family farmers’ attachment to the farm and farm lifestyle give them a competitive advantage since they are willing to sacrifice nearly everything in order to keep the farm going?
