look above at my(other) long post on this page... this culture can equally be considered misandrous(funny how this isnt in chromes spell check).

you can poke a hole in the condom and own me for 18 years. you can tell the cop "i dont feel safe" after physically and verbally abusing me all night...with out so much as a scratch or bruise on you...guess who goes to jail. men face the same damn standards...dont let your girl see you cry...let her see your sensitive side... make sure to beat up other men to show your power to the ladies. dont fight because you will look like a caveman. grab your girls boobs...dont because thats treating her like an object... i had a feminist mother who believed boys were inherently insensitive and aggressive and out to F*** the girls... I still fight my programming to realize that i usually have to play the aggressive roll or the girl will think im gay or not interested. in a lot(not all) of the relationships i've had i find that if I stop romancing the girl the sex stops... this usually comes with crying because we dont have sex anymore (see the inequality?)i painted my toes after the recent fox news j crew controversy... i had quite a few women tell me that i should take it off because its not manly. when i responded with your pants arn't very feminine i was called sexist on more than one occasion.the important part for me to tell you is... some women liked it. just as some men will like you if you want to be any way under the sun. grouping all men together and blaming them for your issues is bs. they (the powers that be...and arnt all male) want us to hate each other... with war comes profit... even if its a gender war.

im sorry you probably had a rough childhood or were very impressionable in college but that doesnt justify hating all men. I had the other end of the spectrum and im against any group that doesnt step back and treat people as people. i think its getting to the point where men need a lobbying group; but i think both genders would be better served by a humanist movement. the only issue is the Rockefellers wont fund that because it may create a unity that opposes their power.

warning...history correction in progress, slight trolling but tastefully done

you got so much right until you failed in the last sentence. our gender does not truly define our interests besides for the biological urge to hump or produce kids...and even then there are cases of nurture (such as over the top feminism) overriding either sexes mating urge.

I encourage you to look beyond the feminist programming you have ingested. the guy you are or were with is proof that men arnt really out to get you. this makes a great distraction from the fact that all of our wages are down and instead of uniting as people we have been fractured into sub groups...
check with the cdc you will find domestic abuse is almost 50/50 but the groups the feminist groups with money to run adds dont acknowledge that women hit men and use weapons against them just as often.saying that patriarchy is the problem is about as accurate as saying all women should be in the kitchen... most of us men dont think like that...

the ones that do were raised by tv telling them to be tough or conservative families. to add to that issue there is a large % of the female population that thinks men are gay or not "man enough" if they arn't tough and domineering. this isnt an excuse for the assholes nor are they and excuse for the bitches...

the point im making again is that whats in your pants is a poor way to group people.people are people and many are more like robots carrying out the programming of their parents or the media.

out of people who are self aware... some of us have morals; some of us believe in dog eat dog. the ones that taught you patriarchy is the issue want the world to be dog eat dog. ill give you that 90% of the worlds leaders have been male... but out of the 10% of female leaders you have had:
Isabella of Spain (the inquisition)

Mary Tudor (seriously needed a tampon)
catherine the great (wars against ottoman empire)
Elizabeth the first (betrayed Mary of scots by offering refuge and then imprisoning her for 19 years only to kill her)

Indira Ghandi
(lead war against Pakistan...declared gov state of emergancy and imprisoned political opponents...more than i want to list comes after this but most importantly under her rule they developed and tested nuclear bombs)
Margret Thatcher
(see falklands war...also supported pinochets chilean regime and ordered murders in norther ireland)

yes many men have done many bad things but the point is women are equally capable of being horrible leaders and suppressing people

Okay, the 'manly' date ideas seem like a hell of a lot more fun to me on any given day, and I certainly don't think of those ideas as 'manly'.

I take special offense to the "Have HIM teach YOU how to play his favorite video game". Given generation gaps, one can readily find women much more interested in video games than men.

As far as being attracted to a stereotypical 'macho' man, there is nothing wrong with that. What drives me biologically does not have to typify the gender role. My husband is a hairy-chested, bald-headed, muscle slinging goatee wearing dude. He hates video games, I love them. I swat spiders, he doesn't. He does all the cooking and cleaning, I change brakes.

The point is: in any decent relationship, one part of the equation should not have to embrace all parts of the 'gender', regardless of what each person values aesthetically or biologically.

I can't help but laugh at ads that talk about how much men like meat. My boyfriend is vegetarian and is a vegetarian for the sole reason as he doesn't think it's right to kill animals even for food. (I'm not a vegetarian and he doesn't hassle me at all about it.)

Also, there's an ongoing unspoken battle between him and myself on who says "Happy Anniversary" to the other first every month (meaning, we both try to say it before the other). And to be honest, he remembers these special dates far more often than I do!

I guess I should remind him that "real" men eat meat and don't care for these mushy markers of time spent together. *eyeroll*

I mean, by the media's standards, my boyfriend just might as well be their idea of female. He can often be caught window shopping on the web, is really smart and encourages me in my studies and also puts off things he'd like to do in order to focus on his studies, he puts more kissie emoticons in our internet conversations than I do, he talks about how he wants to go shopping with me, he wants marriage, he wants kids... But he's a man! These things don't make him not-a-man!

It's it funny how patriarchy is a double-edged sword?

I find it hilarious that the movies mentioned under "play hooky" not only weren't out when the article was written, or when the mag hit the stands, they are only coming out now, more than a month after your post. "A Couple Of Cops" isn't even called that anymore. It smells like a publicist's plant, even though they're from different studios.

I agree. The gender system is very skewed- it is acceptable for women to adopt traditionally "masculine" behaviors, but not for men to adopt traditionally "feminine" behaviors. Masculinity is still more valued in our culture. While this may seem demeaning to women, it also gives them a freedom that men don't have. Today, when you see a woman wearing pants, you don't think of her as cross-dressing unless the pants are baggy. That is girls can wear skirts and most pants without being viewed as deviant from the feminine norm. Men do not have such a range- tight pants and flares, while becoming more common, are still not considered to fill the traditional "masculine" dress. So, not only can guys not wear skirts and still be considered manly, they can't even wear most types of pants. Really, the situation is unfair both to men and women- the traditional "feminine" traits should be as valued as the traditional "masculine" traits, and both genders should have the freedom to move between them.

Well, when you consider that Cosmo is owned by the same people who own Maxim, you find that the magazines compliment each other quite nicely. Also known as, "I'm not surprised, but still disgusted."

Plus Cosmo's sex positions articles are bogus. :)

The equivalent of "girl" is "boy" (as y'all have pointed out). College-aged (and older) men have the term "guy." Women think "gal/s" is too 1950s, but I wish we could take it back. "Boy" was used by whites, especially white men, to treat black men as children.

The word "woman" has practically disappeared on college campuses (among students). Women are referred to as "guys" (as in "hey, guys"), which has the consequence of making them invisible. I know, no one is intending to do so, but what does it do to our heads to have women made invisible umpteen times a day, by so many people? Or women are "girls" (the word used for children--lets remember that there are actual girls in our society). Or women refer to each other as "bitches, hos, and sluts." Yes, it's different if men call women those terms, but women using those terms lets the guys know that women find it OK to use them, and it still reinforces those ideas about female people (again, umpteen times a day by umpteen people).

Women, especially young women, are already infantilized all over the place, so why use "girls" (the child term)? I think this is part of backlash to the women's movement of the late 60s and 70s. Young women claimed "woman" then as a sign that we were adults, would take responsibility for our actions, wanted control and rights over our bodies and lives. If we wouldn't want a "Girls' Center" or "Girls' Studies" at a college or university, why not take back "woman/women?" It's as if "woman" means "old" (ageism and sexism coming together), or "woman of the night," or ... Why not reclaim "woman?"

Again, hard to have a women's movement if we're girls. Why should anyone take us seriously?

I'd say that Cosmo is entrenched in a partriarchal, capitalist society that profits from the promotion of misogynist notions.

Really, why are there so many articles that place responsibility on women to "keep their man" by conforming to contradictory, heterosexist ideals [e.g. "don't be too clingy" "be a damsel in distress" "don't be a nympho" "be a freak in bed!" "be independent!"] Profit! People buy these magazines and consume the ideas therein.

Did the lion and the bear fight before the lion killed you? Or had you just finished eating the bear when the lion attacked?

There has to be a bear involved, that's the standard unit of manliness. :D

(And no, "being thrown" to lions isn't manly; you have to throw *yourself* at lions. Yanno, tackle 'em. Man style. Probably face-first. :D)
