i've read all the posts and i have to say that Lady Gaga's portrayal of people with 'disability', whether temporary or not, is definitely "sexy". i don't care what anybody else says, LG is sexy and so is her video, as well as her position of being disabled. Firstly, that she can make a 'disabled' person "sexy" is a good thing. Secondly, the whole costume accentuates the canes by making her look like 'a mechanized robot'. That would support the argument that the canes are simply for effect, yet that is not their only function. she uses her medium to greeat effect, in fact, and becomes one in essence with the canes. so one can read into the 50 sec. of 'disability' as one who is learning to overcome her difficulties and accepting her new position in the world. she is the master of her destiny. she can choose to accept her 'disability' as a bummer, or embrace it, as in, "the show must go on"! i tend to think the latter as most accurate.

finally, touching on the question of the VMA video on the 'official LG website', i noticed that she goes for the full out grotesque nature (esp. as she seemingly symbolically hangs herself in the end) of her position by showing her teeth in a manner that may be considered derisive. however, i think reading into this too much is a bad idea. her use of the wheelchair and the canes in her art at all is good thing for the disabled community, for it shows that major pop-stars, again, can be "sexy" though 'disabled' and that is a positive message. peace out. -'El Benito'

thx for all the thoughtful comments. my son, who is disabled, just returned fr. Serbia & says Lady Gaga is the most popular singer. Some of us who are active in the Disabilities community were thinking of having Gaga come to an event for the Disabled (can you imagine how large that community is? really big), to talk and sing. I don't know Stephanie, AKA Lady Gaga (her early fans out of NYU gave her the name), altho we know her best childhood friend well. Growing up in NYC, in Manhattan, going to a Roman Catholic girls school, taking the subway every day, hanging out in Little Italy, and so on, you see a lot. In my years in NYC, both in LoweSida & Upper West Side, my mind was always blown by the range and richness of the humanity I encountered. From growing up in Japan, Germany, Va. it was shattering and renewing to be in the city. Gaga is fun to dance to, she writes her own songs, she is politically forceful, w/ a KISS sense of humor/style, Michael's cheerfulness & Brecht's focus. Gaga is a trip. As Buckmeister Fuller used to say, be on your own trip

As important as I think these questions about fetishizing and sexualizing disability are, I don't think Lady Gaga's video is applicable. She is portrayed as being "injured" not "disabled" in the video. She adopts crutches after a bad fall out of a window where she breaks her legs. She then abandons the crutches after she's "healed". Her using the crutches on stage live at the VMAs is an extension of her music video's themes (MANY artists echo their music videos in their concerts/live performances, especially if your at an awards show that is called the Video Music Awards).

Honestly I think that Lady GaGa is one of the most F'ed up people of all time. She has got the craziest mind the music world, or probably the entire world has ever seen. I am suprised that she has not done something with alligator and bears yet.

Maybe she is just doing it to do. Maybe she just wants to de-censorize diability. It is something that is not really talked about opening but if Lady Gaga is doing it we can talk about people with canes (that aren't pimps) freely and not feel guilty.

I'm a big fan of Gaga. I watch all of her interviews and concerts. She's always asked about why she does a lot of the things she does. Knowing her, she probably wants to make a statement about people with disabilities. For her VMA performance, I don't think using wheelchairs, etc. was really needed. Personally, I'd like it better if she were a spokesperson for them. Everything she does has a reason.

As far as Lady Gaga possibly having Asperger's Syndrome, in regards to Tim M's post. It's rather insulting to suggest that people with Asperger's Syndrome are disordered. Then again the fact that you said she may have Asperger's Syndrome or Bipolar Disorder really shows your lack of knowledge when it comes to psychiatric labels now doesn't it?

I have Asperger's Syndrome, and I understand by most people who don't understand it, or people who mindlessly follow whatever anti-Autism propaganda groups like Autism Speaks perpetuate. That people with Asperger's Syndrome lack Empathy. That is where you were going with this right Tim?

What is referred to as Empathy, means not understanding others, not having a proper theory of mind when it comes to perceving what others think. It does not, mean people with Asperger's Syndrome are unable to appreciate the feelings and emotions of others. Also, people with Bipolar Disorder, tend to not be inconsiderate of the emotions and feelings of others.

I know, most people who throw around Asperger's Syndrome, as if there's something inherently negative about it, tend to not realize that there is a good chance someone with that neurodiversity will read what they've said, and not feel highly in regards of it. By the way, before people have their giggle about the term neurodiversity, it is a real term. People do have different types of minds, and different ways of viewing the world with them, and there is discrimination against people who's minds aren't perecieved as "normal"

So just a reminder, think before you post something ignorant about someone else's neurodiversity. People who think differently than you are people too.

This all started after she became friends with Marilyn Manson. Nobody asked why Marilyn Manson used crutches on electrical stilts, cause hey maybe he really could fall down without them. Nobody said, "Gee I wonder what statement he's making about disability". He also said all that weird twitching from the video for Beautiful People, was based on Agent Orange kids he met in Florida, I think so don't come after me if I was wrong, been some time since I read that.

So Lady Gaga is ripping off Marilyn Manson, and now people wonder what this has to do in regards to disability and disabled people, because she unlike Marilyn is a mainstream pop-star. It's all the same schtick, she's using the imagery most likely in a metaphorical way as Marilyn Manson did. So, is it in poor taste? Yes, but has anything in the history of shock rock ever been in good taste? I think the bigger issue here, is how she's unashamedly ripping off Marilyn Manson, either it's that or he's adopted her as his protege.

I don't think anyone takes Lady Gaga seriously enough, to really take her views on disabled people or her acts regarding them all that seriously. I can't blame some people for being offended, and feeling that they're being treated with sense of tokenism regarding her performances. It's difficult for me to say where to go from here.

As far as Lady Gag selling sex, really. Like she's the first artist to do that, remember Maddonna? How about Britney Spears? Maybe the issue should be why are female singers who's primary goals aren't about being sexualized, popular?

I think the disabled robot thing was in her paprazzi video, that song is about the lengths that todays pop stars will go to stay hot and be in the media spotlight, the storyline in the video clearly shows her being beaten up by her man, and that she still shows up in a wacky robot outfit afterwards even though she can barely walk.

People who are shoved into our faces nearly everywhere we go tend to get folks talking. OJ Simpson's pathetic Bronco chase got people talking, too. And let's not forget Octomom! Doesn't she look great now? I know how she looks because I went to the grocery store yesterday. Sigh.

And TV's shining down upon us nearly everywhere we go these days helps a lot with the shoving. If not Gaga, we'd be talking about whoever happened to be filling the "edgy off-beat pop star" role today, so really she's incidental.

Irrelevant trivia that might help someone, somewhere: I bought a TV-B-Gone® to help cut down on my pop culture exposure, and I highly recommend it. Google it. Buy it. Works GREAT and is almost as much fun as a cellphone jammer, but not quite (google that too).
