The surface numbers don't make sense; in a typical 3 hour football broadcast there are 60 minutes of field play, (guaranteed). TV shows all original plays, so there is 1 hour out of 3 total. If you add the real action minutes to the football illustration above, the majority of time is on the field, yes? (I do agree that TV timeouts are a distraction if you attend a live game).

I just can a little cigarette in the sun and a bit more of a thing.

My thing is that in New Zealand (and I am so sure this is the case for other English speaking countries), our media diet is largely produced in the USA.

I'm interested in exporting this for an us-the-oppressed point of view.

Using exactly the same lens that I use to interrogate the heterosexual and nuclear-family bias in the media (which as a gay man posits my experience in the us-the-oppressed category).

I dunno, maybe I don't have anything better to do. Its just seems that a blog that will (in an interesting way) pick apart sexism, homophobia, racism and issue of class, would be able to at least acknowledge a USA-centric slant.

Look - I know I moan on about this endlessly, I actually really like this blog and visit frequently.

I get that this Blog and it's authors are located in the USA.

Just every now and again I want to point out what I perceive - a bias toward the USA.

I haven't watched much american football, so I can't agree or disagree on the definitions of "real action" in that particular game, but I have noticed the low 'play' to 'commentary' ratio. Obviously I'm naïve to the finer points of the game, but it seems like the ball's in play for all of 10 seconds before the 5 minutes of slow-mo recaps and angry coach montages start. Compared to sports like rugby or soccer it seems (to this outsider) incredibly frustrating and tiresome to watch.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if during a 5 day cricket test there was only 11 minutes of real action.

Yeah, I got hung up on the graphic too (even though I was telling myself, "move on, it doesn't matter!"). Not only do the football slices seem off, it really bugs me that the photo sizes don't correspond to the data. The sizes are apparently random, and it's really distracting.

But even baseball is stretched artificially to allow for more commercials. Players have complained about the long, mandatory ad break between innings, for instance.

The phrase "real action" is part of the text of the video---see around 35 seconds.

The only change to the post was that I went back and added (American) to the title and specified that I meant American football, not soccer, in the text. I never used the term "real" action.

I don't see "real action" in the article. I thought perhaps it had been there but was edited out, but Soc. Images is pretty good about using strikethroughs to show when they've changed something. So I don't think they ever used that term.
