Pat Buchanan proves that racism is alive and well. This is how he reacted to the criticism of James Watson:

Did he defend the chattel slavery in which five of our first seven presidents engaged? No. Did he agree with Abraham Lincoln that blacks did not deserve equal social and political rights and should be sent back to the continent whence their ancestors came? No. Did he argue for the segregation that was the law in the nation's capital in which this writer grew up? No. Did he utter the "N-word" used by Harry Truman, who integrated the armed forces, and Lyndon Johnson, who enacted the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965? No.

Watson neither endorsed segregation nor expressed any animus toward people of color. He had simply told The Sunday Times he was "inherently gloomy about the prospects of Africa" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours — whereas all the testing says not really."

While there is a natural desire to believe all people are equal, Watson said, "people who have to deal with black employees find this not true."

Have you seen the <a href="http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=Stolpersteine&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi" rel="nofollow">'Stolpersteine'</a>? 'Everywhere' is a 'space clearly defined as a memorial'. I really don't think this makes any difference.
My bet would be that in the South this would not be accepted a second. Check out the post here on the omission of slavery from plantations... or segregated proms... or the movie "The Order of Myths" on Mobile, Alabama and how 'worshipped' the family is who used to be the biggest slave holders (and who still have 'nice' slave figurines in their living room).

I feel that people respect the signs because they are in a space that is clearly defined as a memorial, so people come into the area knowing what to expect and understanding the historical basis for the signs, and don't think that the signs are up for people to reminisce about "the good old days" or that they feel this is how things should still be. Each of the signs contains the following caption: "Places of rememberance in the Bavarian Quarter: Marginalization, loss of rights, expulsion, deportation and murder of Berlin Jews from 1933 to 1945." I feel that if in the American South a similar project sprang up, people would be respectful of it as long as it was done in a tasteful manner as this project is. Or maybe not. Maybe we haven't come far enough yet to be comfortable with such a reminder of the past. Do you know of any similar projects in the South and how they've been received by the surrounding neighborhoods?

The distinction between Jews and Germans makes me think of current rhetoric regarding "real Americans". A whole groups of citizens can just be labeled "other" and "not real".

@Comrade Bender: And what do you think would happen to similar historic signage in the American South. I bet you $50 it would get defaced and torn down within a week.

At Bayrischer Platz in Berlin, there are signs hanging from the lampposts with historical notices from this era. The two that stick in my mind - one right at the park stating segregated benches and one on the street near a grocery store notifying that Jews were not allowed to purchase fresh milk or eggs. I was really impressed by that - great connection to history, something that really happened on those streets there, reminding us all to never forget.
