I was on the train the other day sitting across from a couple who were discussing how they “needed” a chandelier for the entry way to their home.  I do it too; I use the word “need” to describe something I want… or, more specifically, something that I think is required for a complete home.  I’ve lived for 3 years without a bedside table, but I still feel like it’s something that I “need.”

It’s important to be reminded of just how much some people live without and I offer this selection of photographs from a slide show called Planet Slum, sent in by Dmitriy T.M., in that spirit.  The slide show features photographs by Jonas Bendikson, who stitched together panoramic images of 360 degree images of homes in the slums.

A couple lives with their three teenage daughters in this residence in Jakarta.  “There is space to sit upright, but not to stand.”   ” Bendikson explains, “You see here the same elements as in your own house: framed family pictures, wallpaper improvised…”
