I posted earlier about some Kellogg’s ads from Brazil. Turns out they were spec ads, not actual ones that ran in Brazil. I had done some background checking and found three ads that were supposedly from the series, all on websites that are usually quite good at screening out, or clearly labeling, spec ads, so I went ahead and posted them (and now I see they’ve been taken down from several other places too).  But several commenters made it clear they didn’t actually run in Brazil, and in general our policy is that we don’t post ads put together by ad agencies but that weren’t ever actually used.

There was quite a bit of good commenting on it, and I apologize to those who took the time to bring up some important issues–how do you go about challenging something without being accused of reinforcing it instead, how do our personal biases play into what we see, cultural differences, and so on. I am sorry about the sloppy fact-checking.
