yet again, a fantastic, well-argued, detailed and measured response from KD. i hope that Eduardo realises how scattered and incoherent his posts seem in comparison, despite all his harping about reason. sometimes i can barely understand what point he is trying to make!

looking critically at the images which represent today's Western social values isn't about political correctness, it's about justice and equality. reducing such revolutionary notions to 'political correctness' is not only a case of comparing apples and oranges, it actively triviliases the women's rights and civil rights movements. but ofcourse, that's just what republicans want to do. republicans are elitists and don't care about equality because it threatens their white-male-supremacy. let's not make this political please -- whether the commentators here are 'liberals' or not makes no difference to the subject matter at hand.

if the cameRAPErson had been a woman, such behaviour would have been very unlikely. women who love women rarely objectify them -- since they ARE ALSO women themselves and understand the implications. women love women for who they are, their personality. ofcourse they also very likely appreciate beauty, but that is different from objectification (reducing a person to a single non-individual trait, such as Le Butt). men objectify women (and gay men objectify men) because men are predisposed by society to desire human-shaped (and other) objects which will satisfy their desires, rather than people -- partly because male 'pride' cannot risk being challenged by a real and equal person. men must 'conquer' women. the male gaze 'possesses' the female sexually. it is by definition entirely different from the female gaze, and so this ad could never have been made with a female cameraperson, unless ofcourse it had been scripted by a male.

"“[…] an altar overrun by women, songs written to please a woman’s sentiments (“You are my everything,” etc.), an ethos of pacifism and self-surrender, all of which serves to render the men who still frequent the churches passive and emasculated."

Uh... "pacifism" doesn't mean "being passive." I don't see what the ideological stance of nonviolence has to do with anything else being discussed. Where is this quote even from?

Last time I was in Europe, I seem to remember numerous ads with nearly naked or sometimes totally exposed (breasts) women at bus stops, in magazines, and on TV. If anything, the standards for "modesty" in European advertising are far more liberal than in America. This is not to comment on the actual level of sexism, although it wouldn't seem like much of a stretch to say that if it's easier in a legal sense to depict naked or nearly-naked women in ads, it's also more likely that more of these ads would be sexist.

hm I like Jennifer's approach (see Dec 19 post) ....are these ads off the air yet? If not, I'm happy to join in in banning all reebok products until they are.

I have also forwarded this discussion page onto other potentially interested people

I agree sexually explicit and sad for Reebok. It should be removed. What is commercialism coming too and prime time at that. I was watching television with my husband we are both in our mid 40's it had been the 2nd time I had seen the commercials. I'm not sure for him. When the commericial was over, I asked him purposely,"what was that commericial about?" He looked like a deer in the headlights, speechless! He then answered, "I'm not really sure,I wasn't paying attention". Sure he was,and Reebok's trying to sell shoes here! Please.

I have a very strong concern with your recent ads, regarding your easy tone shoes. I am a 30 yr old woman, who is attractive and in shape. I was watching TV and saw your commercial... my jaw dropped in disgust that this kind of a degrading sexually explicit commercial was on. I was soo curious to see what comapny had the audacity to put this on televison to sell their product... weak. So i waited while the boobs talked to each other to see what company this was. I was in SHOCK that it was reebok, a brand that I have worn as a child and still do as an adult. Not only that but Reebok has at lease 4 of these! You are sending the wrong message to young woman and men, Woman are not just butt and boobs. Reebok should not have to stoop to this level. I have since shown my co-workers, friends and family.. mainly women (since our body parts are the ones you are displaying) and they were also geuinely appauled. I have made a pack with some of my girlfriends that we will not purchase your shoes or product until these commercials are REMOVED! I will proudly wear your name again like I always have when your garbage is taken off my TV. I'd love to meet the marketing team that "put thier heads together" for this one!

Hi Tara, Thank you for replying to my post. I do understand the marketing strategy and agree with you (how they can use women to appeal to other women, in this case the girl being super attractive and fit, so women should buy the shoes and look the same) And while I'm sure it did reach many people like that, most people should know that a pair of shoes alone will not give you amazing results. Sadly I said *should, that does not mean that people do, and thats what marketing is all about.

I know that to change the problem that women must DO something to show them what we want, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Actually I was looking for the complaint page for Reebok so that I could give them a simliar, yet more dignified speech, and that is when I stumbled along this site :)

If only it were easier, and women were more wanting to band together, but history has shown that women are the most passive "minority" when it comes to aquiring new/equal rights. History has shown that women do not turn to violent means to get what they want, and other parts of history has shown that many times violence is what it takes to change policy. (I'm thinking of the civil rights movemnet here) (and I don't mean to turn to violence for this cause,of course, I'm simply talking about when women were trying to get the right to vote, and other equal rights, which was a much more important topic/right than this.)

It also does not help that cause that many women are on the other side favoring the old roles of women, and how they should be submissive and such. :(

If anyone has any advice as to how to 'complain *effectivly*' it would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Erica marketing shows, best I understand, that you get a better bang for your buck if you use a woman in your ad.

Women appeal to the men for obvious sexual reasons, and the women appeal to women for reasons of comparison/competition (ie, this is how I should look/what I should buy etc.. cause this woman in the ad, who is attractive or whatever, looks great it in/is buying ...)

So if you can only do 1 ad with your ad $, best to use a women.

And instead of debating whether this is fair or not (which it obviously isn't), women should start DOING something about it ...

Eg: letting companies/products/merchants know that they'd luvvv to see men in ads, that men are/can be sexy and that they draw our attention and encourage/motivate our decisions.

This isn't as easy as it seems as women's 'role' is to be observed, admired, desired, whereas the men are the 'observers, hunters' etc..

this is old fashioned thinking but honestly, as much as female's have advanced in this world, it's clear that traditional underlying unconscious motivations are still the societal norm.

though Thank God for some recent men's beauty, facial, preening products that've come onto the scene. Created some great print ads of sexy men to appreciate! and my pocketbook's happy too, being 'male' products I'm not tempted to buy !

ps. a side note on society's uneven playing field: larry king the other night asked tyra banks if there should be a male version of her supermodel show. reply: no, as unlike female models, no one can name the top male models in the industry today. the interest just isn't there.

Oh and I said sex appeal should be removed is because although shows and movies can be blocked from being viewed, commercials can not, and I was thinking of children when I said that, I wouldn't mind seeing hot half-naked men on T.V. all the time....lol :)

I also can not understand as to why they have decided to market thier shoes this way. The media has a terrible double standard when it comes to advertising, and these ads show it. Now instead of just priding women around like objects when appealing to men, they have chosen to do the same when appealing to women?! In what ways does this make sense? If we wanted to see that we would just watch advertising for men with heavy sex appeal, or ya know...porn? If they must use sex appeal why do they not use really attractive men, at least that way the media would even itself out, although I think it would be best for everyone if sex appeal was completly taken out of the media. I would much rather see hot men advertised to me than hot women, let the men oggle at them, I don't want to, and I don't think other women want to either. The only commercial I can think of that advertised to women with sex appeal are the new degree commericals where the lady wipes the deoderant on the hot busboy. There have been others, but they are grossy overshadowed by the ones marketed to men. I mean women make up half the population right? So why are advertisments not marketed to us at least half the time? Or do we still live in a nation where men are viewed as the only ones who make financial choices/purchases?
