Exactly. There are two dueling tropes: one says that wives never “put out,” and that sucks (ref. “she was a nympho when we met!”); the other says that having to have sex with your wife is a chore (ref. basically every episode of “Married with Children”). It makes no sense.

Yeah, this is quite bizarre.
I grew up with the “What Would You Do for a Klondike Bar” ad campaign. Usually, they’d feature a middle-aged adult doing something silly (clucking like a chicken, jumping around like a monkey) in order to earn a Klondike bar. So this is quite a departure. Since when are ice cream bars so aggressively gendered?! I was also startled by the specific demographic of males they now seem to be aiming for: the “Man Show” viewer, the now-ubiquitous overgrown-child-with-a-porn-addiction. Mama mia.

But the fact that the same parent company makes Axe sort of makes it all fall into place. More and more, the “Jackass”/”Man Show” viewer is becoming THE default marketing demographic. Everything from movies to underwear to food, is marketed to Socially Dysfunctional Axe Dude, or to his brainwashed girlfriend, Stockholm Syndrome Wannabe-Stripper (her last name’s hyphenated, cuz she’s empowerfulized!).

Because women only eat fat-free yogurt and Special K, of course. Every ‘good’ marketing exec knows this.

It’s frustrating beyond the nth degree. Even the food I want to eat is ranked by gender.

That’s a really good point. I was actually taken aback the other day while reading a research paper the other day and finding the word ‘she,’ in place of the usual generalizer, ‘he’.

Absolutely! Leisure Suit Larry also started up with an age-challenge quiz. And the point of the game was to get him to go to a pixellated prostitute, right? The player was assumed to be male and was definitely supposed to identify with LSL.

It takes a special kind of idiocy for a company to try to sell food by referencing how cool porn is (and how women hate it cuz they’re all frigid and jealous). Leisure Suit Larry sucked in the 80s! I can’t imagine anyone being nostalgic for it.
