This has to be the worst movie I have ever seen in my 62 years on this Planet. It had no Story, and a very weak Star.
If directors of cheap movies have to falsely advertise this crap for financial gain, then the Movie Industry is at an all time LOW.

I've seen and reviewed this film (http://ferdyonfilms.com/2009/10/ciff-2009-a-simple-man-2009.php). The truth is that Ford is very forthright about homosexuality, but avoids physically explicit displays, even refraining from having Firth and his lover kiss. There is no explicit nudity either. This is a film about love and loss, and is quite impressive for a debut directorial effort.

But with a trailer, the question is not "how well does this summarize the plot of the film?" but rather "how much does this make you want to see the movie?"

If the homoerotic elements were censored out of the film itself (as they arguably were in "Brokeback Mountain") it would be a travesty. But the way I see it, these trailers' main gimmick is to build a sense of mystery and beauty around the film, and in that sense I think the less explicit second trailer is more effective.

And in both cases, they've succeeded in moving a movie I've never heard of to the top of my list to see this year. No harm done.

Before watching the videos, I was hesitant to accept the accompanying commentary about the elimination of the gay aspect of the movie. After watching them, though, I have to agree. The review praise of the movie is specifically inserted over those scenes which showed homoeroticism, and those that remained (lying on the beach) were severely cropped and shortened. I am not sure what the purpose of this is, as the audience would be seeing the same movie, and those who have only seen the second trailer would be mislead into expecting a traditional heterocentric plot line.

By the time "Brokeback Mountain" was rolled out for wider release, the first word of its title was already synonomous with "gay" in pop culture. Rather than trying to trick audiences into thinking otherwise, the marketing emphasized the presence of very famous stars (including the females), the films landslide of critical praise, and its position as a serious drama to appeal to the wider adult market that fills cinemas in autumn and winter. I suspect that this helped to frame the film as a pop-culture event, rather than a specialized "gay movie," so that it could reach a broader audience.

And I think that's absolutely the correct approach. One complaint I've never had as a queer person is that there aren't enough advertisers trying to sell me stuff, but I'd certainly be happy if they helped more and better gay narratives take their rightful place in the culture at large.

Since neither ad actually reveals "central plot points," but both feature very subtle flashes of homoeroticism, I don't find Gwen's comments all that relevant. The latter ad zeroes in on the film's big stars and its Oscar prospects, and these are the things that fill seats for serious dramas at this time of year. I've never heard of the actors playing Firth's lovers, so I can't imagine why their names would attract me to the film. But I'd watch Julianne Moore read the phone book.

"Farewell My Concubine" was directed by a straight man. So the question is, how does a gay director treat his onscreen subjects? "A Single Man" is directed by a gay man.

I've only seen a handful of films directed by a gay man. "Drugstore Cowboy," "My Own Private Idaho," "Elephant," and "If...", which I don't believe really utilize the male gaze, unless it is from a gay perspective. "If...." is definitely from a gay perspective, though it is never really made explicit in the movie.

My educated guess is that these two trailers will be screened before different sets of films, thereby attempting to talk to different audiences. Hollywood assumes a lot about its audience, and in this case, it looks like they think they can sell it to at least 2 crowds (the divide is less sexuality than gender I'd imagine).
What struck me in these two trailers are the aesthetic pointers to Mad Men: not only is it set in the 1960s (in the first trailer there's a date, not in the second) but the male body falling / sinking with the close ups of eyes and lips... Very savvy cut!

From my (extremely limited) research, yes: the male gaze (in film) applies only to heterosexual men (or, I suppose, homosexual women). I've yet to see a man in a film treated (visually) like a woman, what with the framing and whatever, even if the main character was a gay man. ("Farewell My Concubine" is a really good example of this.)

I remember being very much informed what Brokeback Mountain was about, but I get most of my information from the internet, rather than television commercials, so you may be right. It would make sense to target the largest audience possible with television commercials, whereas the internet is more self-selecting and people are able to seek out a much wider range of information. I find the idea that a bunch of cowboy-loving conservatives may have been tricked into watching Brokeback Mountain pretty amusing.

I believed the power of Dorian Gray was that you had to imagine the horriffic things he did offscreen, and that those things gave you insight into your own morality structure. (Though knowing Wilde I guess I always imagined you were supposed to guess he was a homosexual.)
