Yes, perhaps, and why not? But since this post is about “Gender Pay Gap at Jewish Community Organizations” you would think it is about Jewish people especially and purposefully making a point about them and their ways in comparison to other groups. Not “I found a random statistic about random group of people and decided to post it without a second thought”, which it seems to be. Seriously, perhaps a bit consideration might be in order with these things. I think there needs to be a real profound reason to pin point a group like this. Not that I know if this Gwen is himself Jewish or not but if he is not to me it feels like it is really such unsuitable thing to post without relating it to some actual issue.

I don’t think it’s particularly about being Jewish either–I suspect similar patterns hold for a whole range of volunteer/community organizations. This just happens to be one that was sent in. I’ve been searching for a breakdown of similar info for organizations in general but so far haven’t found anything.

I previously worked for a social services organization under the Jewish Federation in Los Angeles and have several thoughts, none of which defend the gender disparities displayed here.

1. Insular religious groups with poor treatment of women?! Say it ain’t so!

Judaism is not an especially insular religious group unless you are talking about specific Orthodox or Hassidic groups, and those are not the people running many of these organizations. So, the answer to this “question” is No.

2. These statistics are not all that different from national numbers, and really speak more to assimilation rather than any specific Jewish-originated discrimination against women.

3. Unfortunately, much of this disparity can be seen stereotypical gender divides in social service professions. For example, there are far more female than male social workers, so the workforce will be overwhelmingly female.

Does this gap need to be closed? Yes, absolutely. But I’m not sure it’s about the organizations being Jewish in affiliation.

I think this can fairly be viewed as critical self-examination within the Jewish community. The discrepancies in pay are probably due to the fact that most of these organizations are nonprofits, in which case the real interest is that the CEOs of these nonprofits are making huge amounts of money. I’d be interested, though, in statistical comparisons between Jewish NPO and overall NPO pay distributions.

You are giving me more credit than you should. I didn’t think of the post in a larger “see how religions treat women?” context; I didn’t actually think of that until I read your comment. I was more interested in the fact that women make up the majority of volunteers in community organizations and yet make up a disproportionately small % of the paid leaders of those organizations. This is one particularly example of that, which a Jewish newspaper collected. I’d love to have similar data for a broad collection of community organizations, but I haven’t yet found any studies on it. I’ve heard people talk about it, but haven’t found any hard data.

Yes, exactly. But is it really fair to group all of these organisation together and draw statistic out of that based on that they are all Jewish? I would personally be a little uneasy if someone did that to Christians, since as we know there are vast ideological and theological differences within the Christian community and lumping all of these people together as statistical averages would be senseless. I’m sure it is so with Jewish people too.

This post feels like a cheap way of making the point about rights of women and religions.

In the Church this been called the “stained-glass ceiling.” Not sure what the Jewish term would be. Maybe the “glass mechitza”? (that’s the thing that divides men from women in an orthodox synagogue. Unfortunately, we’re always finding new places to identify glass dividers…
