Well yes, there are bigger problems in the world of course. But if you’re so concerned with them, why are you on a sociology website? It’s a small problem in the big scheme of things, but it’s still nice if the problem could be, you know, solved? And the first step to solving a problem is to acknowledge it exists, but apparently that’s offensive to you.

And I think you’re completely missing the point here. It’s not a matter of pedophilia. As you’ve said, pedophile aren’t attracted to grown women. The problem is that it’s degrading to women. These costumes are saying that everything a woman wears must be sexy. Even if the outfit is childish. Hell, the fact that about half of all costumes are something childhood-related gives the implication that a grown woman acting liking a little girl is sexier then a grown woman acting like a grown woman. It’s not an idea woman want other women to encourage in themselves.

How would you feel if they were selling a Peter Pan costumes for men, except instead of a costume they just gave you the hat, shoes, and a green thong? You would probably think it’s ridiculous, and go buy a normal costume. Except that women don’t have that option. Every woman’s costume is sexy.

The only thing I’d like to add to this (and I know I’ve joined in on this one late…I was just looking up something for my bullsh*t “sociology” class and this popped up) is that regardless of the clothing, it’s the person IN the clothing who is still the object of desire, the clothing cannot really be blamed. If some sicko gets aroused looking at kids, I can bet you a week’s pay that same sicko isn’t going to get aroused by some woman dressed up as a slutty girl scout or cheerleader or anything. Because they’re freaks who are attracted to children, and they’re attracted to children no matter what they wear, right? So let’s worry more about pedophiles actually interested in your child in “that way” more than the hot chick in the schoolgirl uniform. Totally different thing altogether. With everything bad and very REAL in this world, skanky costumes are the least of my worries. And as far as young girls dressing up inappropriately, well, that’s you, the PARENT, who can make that call and say “no”. Of course, truth be told, I’ve probably dressed up in more slutty female Halloween costumes than male costumes, so where does MY deviance fit into the equation??? lol

Most women grew up with Disney and fairy tales so it seems like an easy place to turn for ideas. How can we buy them if they aren’t even there to buy in the first place?! In general, people have a choice among store-bought costumes, a custom-made costume, or staying at home on Halloween. Custom costumes can be time-consuming or expensive, and a lot of people don’t have that time/money to spare, so store-bought costumes are the obvious choice for most. If sexy sexy is all that’s there, sexy sexy is what they’ll wear, even if they’d have preferred something else.

sorry, just checked the junkmail section of my email today and saw this – if you go to your local library or bookstore there are some really good books on handwriting analysis, but whats easiest to start out with is online sites. There are several dedicated to it with detailed pictures of various handwriting samples that are really easy to understand.

I don’t really have a favorite to recommend at the moment, but if you even just google it you’ll come up with some good results.

Yes, these images are of outfits of women, dressing as girls, dressing as sexy sexy women… but.

Halloween seems to serve two groups these days.
1) children- to dress up, stuff their faces, get scarred out of their wits, and stuff their faces again.
2) young-adults/unmarried adults – dress up (‘slutty’ [male and female and everyone in between]), get wasted, hook up with count dracula or ‘sun-burnt man,’ and get wasted some more.

So basically it’s Kids and Sex.

Or, more aptly – Dressing up, doing things that are bad for you, doing things you’ll regret later, and then repeating..

So based on its background I’m not too shocked or concerned (which kind of concerns me).

This is a good point, and can also be linked to the comments made by mike. At what point are retailers simply responding to demand and begin sculpting it? Simply saying that retailers dumbly supply what is sought by consumers belies the complexity of this interaction (and the influences of greater society). The fact that the sexy beer wench costume was sold out should not be taken as clear cut that women embrace such things, when perhaps they are making choices from limited options and subject to social pressures as to an ‘appropriate’ choice. Just sayin.

Oh my god, I cannot believe that website is literally advertising “slut costumes!” I’m speechless, and dumbfounded that any self-respecting woman would ever want to wear something labeled “slutty.”

Then again, there are a lot of women out there with no respect for themselves.

Has it ever occurred to you that the reason some women (heh, certainly not the kind of women I associate with) have virtually no awareness of why these are wrong because they’ve been raised under this sexualized environment their entire lives?

Every single one of my female friends agrees on how disgusting these costumes are. None of us would necessarily say it’s wrong to dress sexy, either, and some of us do so occasionally. The issue is not with dressing sexy, it’s with having it pushed down your throat by retailers!
