Coming to this page a little late, but wanted to add how upset I was last year to see a sexy Oscar the Grouch costume for women. Really? The men's Oscar costume was realistic (as far as that goes), but the women's Oscar version was really a tight mini-dress with Oscar and his trash can screen printed on. boo.

@ Katie

Honey you can definitely feel wanted without conforming to the societal peep show that is Halloween.

The fact that you can only feel wanted by participating in what is expected of us females, and moreover lament the fact that you can't do so, shows an overwhelming amount of insecurity.

I'm in college, just turned 18 in August, and I have no qualms about going out on Halloween in whatever the hell I want. Everyone in my hall bought an overpriced "sexy" costume made of cheap fabric and plastic doodads. I chose to be Lady Gaga (because I like her). Even though the stores had Gaga outifts premade, I did her black feathery outfit she wore at the 2009 VMA's (look it up, full of black gold and lace.) It was alluring and tasteful at the same time, and just my style (I lean heavily towards dark themes).

Just do what you did when you were a kid and use your noggin to think of something or someone who you'd like to be for a day. Do you really want to be subservient by living up to expectations placed on you by others on the day where you can pretend to be anything and be applauded?

By putting together your own costume you don't have to encounter those feelings of inadequacy because you choose. You don't have to purchase a mass produced, one-size fits all product of commoditization.

Please honeybabysugardollface love yourself, before someone takes advantage of your insecurities and puts you in a position where self doubt becomes self hate.

Truthfully, I wouldn't mind wearing a "sexy" costume. Why? I want to feel sexy and desirable! I'm only 17, and a virgin at that, but I want to be wanted. I don't see what's wrong with that. Unfortunately, I cannot fit in any of these "sexy" costumes. Not because of my weight, oh no, I'm only a size 6. But because of my lack of breasts. That's my only problem with those costumes. You need breasts for them. And I don't have them, and thus halloween shopping makes me feel inadequate.

I don't know what my point was... it kind of ran away from me...

I think it’s gender and weight discrimination. I am a plus size woman who would not wear a mini skirt, but the point is that the makers of the costume took away the choice for women. It is hard enough to be overweight without costume/clothing manufacturers reminding us of this constantly.
