The problem is that a lot of "middle-class" white people dress up like "poor white trash" or "hillbillies" as a way of distancing themselves from this part of their culture - basically poverty and ignorance. What I find effective is the parodies of middle class whites done by Dave Chappelle.

You exhibit the same misinformation that most white people do when grappling with their own privilege. The point is not whether YOU personally committed the atrocities. The point is that in this country (and in this world, for the most part) white people have an advantage simply because of the color of their skin, INCLUDING YOU. I am not saying all white people are rich & pampered. Nonetheless, you benefit from that in myriad ways I am sure you do not yet realize (though you can educate yourself about it), and people of color still suffer due to laws and institutions, social norms, and stereotypes that are a part of our society. I'm not saying you should walk around feeling guilty all the time. There is nothing more annoying than white guilt. Just recognize, and adjust yourself accordingly.

I agree with Novakaine007.... Intent and respect are key. Many, many people - children and adults - aren't aiming for scary, funny, or fantastical. They enjoy Halloween costumes as an opportunity to play make-believe - to live out, for one night, a small bit of fantasy. (Why else does an older woman dress up as a Catholic school girl? Why else are movie stars, and the characters they've played, so popular as costumes? Ditto on the costumes of esteemed professions...) I, myself, am fascinated by other cultures - present-day, ancient, and everything in-between. For this reason, I have dressed up as a traditional Native American, Ivoirian woman, Indian woman, Latina TV personality, and Eqyptian pharoess. Not all of my costumes were perfectly historically or culturally accurate (though I did try on my near-zero budget!). Twice I used Halloween as an opportunity to wear beautiful African dresses I had been given as gifts. If not for Halloween, when else can an adult don the garb of a culture not his/her own and enjoy a night of fantasy without being poked fun at?

Pocahontas is not a "character." She was a real person, who died in her early 20's after going back to Europe with John Smith and dying of disease.

Lots of native american people "myself included" despise the movie avatar for its racist connotations. i would roll my eyes if I saw a neytiri costume tonight, but i wouldn't call it racist. the critique of that movie is at a much deeper level than i expect most kids and their parents to know (though i wish movie-makers would be a little more educated, but as long as racism and tired old tropes sell, they will make movies that use them).

there is no respect as dressing as a sexualized 'indigenous' person. none whatsoever, and anyone who fools themselves into thinking that there is is a product of their own privilege and ignorance.

lol please to read and comprehend the first amendment. no one's getting arrested or breaking the law. so that is an irrelevant lack of understanding. plus, why is it that people whine about "PC!" so you can say stupid things, but others don't have the same right to voice their opinion on it? hmm, something is wrong with this picture.
