There’s a “sexy [whatever]” costume for every conceivable occupation. I remember seeing a nightmare-inducing “sexy clown” costume in blogs, for example.

I’m disturbed that Spencer’s is considered ‘child friendly.’

I had the opportunity this summer to compare a regular sex shop with Spencer’s when looking for a ‘kinky gift.’

Spencer’s had pretty much everything the sex shop had, minus porn videos and magazines… but you can grab the videos at the music/comic shop, which was two stores down.

I wondered why it was such a big deal to check my ID in the sex shop whereas children and teens basically live in Spencer’s and music/comic shops.

I also find it disturbing that many of the “sexy” costumes are highly sexualized versions of characters who are supposed to be little girls–Alice (in Wonderland), Dorothy, Goldilocks, Red Riding Hood, and other popular or fairy tale characters. They even have a sexified Spongebob Squarepants costume…though I’m not sure how many adult women want to go as a voluptuous Spongebob…

Some of the sexy costumes are just creepy or don’t make any sense at all. This year I’m going as the Mad Hatter, and I was surfing the internet for some ideas and I found–you guessed it!–a Sexy Mad Hatter costume.

It’s for this reason (and the ridiculous cost) that I always make my own costumes, which is far more fun anyway. :)

Same here, Jillian. Every costume or Halloween store I’ve been into had these “sexy” costumes on display, often in the same aisles as children’s costumes. Even Party City had one in its front window.
