No, it was because Alessandra was debating some ignorant, liberal views on sexuality at the time, and so she conveniently linked to this pedophilia scandal information, to educate the morons she was debating with. And yes, quite old article, but you are still obsessing about Alessandra? Funny!

I was playing Tekken at 6 and I continued to play "boy" games and I still do. I /do/ like plenty of those puzzle games and such ("girly" games), but nothing beats a good ol' game of Tekken and/or Mortal Kombat (with the blood on high) >:D

Agreed there's nothing wrong w/these careers per se. I'm primarily a stay at home mom, which often equates to the "Imagine Babysitter" game. (not sure I like that) I found, however, when looking for games for my daughter, she's annoyed at all the gender based games at girls her age (preteen). She's become aware of how media and toy companies attempt to mold young girls with frivilous stuff such as fashion and appearance and has often commented there's never anything there that stimulates her interests which happens to involve more mindful creativity; but unfortunately, these types of girly topics is the center of her classmates' conversations. Is media merely feeding girls what they want or does media directly shape it? She was particularly annoyed at what's been done with Strawberry Shortcake having grown up with her back when she wasn't trying to be a teenage superficial ding-dong. Sadly, these are the kinds of visual images kids get about "being a girl" (many post-toddler cartoons are increasingly showing girls as powerful but via girly-girl fluff). My toddler loves trucks and gets happy when we pass by construction sites. My son loves the color pink. Think of how this gender based society trips me up with child-rearing! :-) What's odd to me is that I feel there's a sense of increase in the gender segregation through the youth market but I'm unsure if that's true or just my perception because my kids often don't fit typical gender behavior; they exhibit both male and female interests and I encourage that.

Good food for thought. Thanks.

(I hope the German is OK).

No, it’s not.
=================

I was referring to the translation into German.

The issue is not if the comparison is disturbing, but if it is on target.

I would say this comparison may disturb some people because it addresses issues they irresponsibly neglect.

For a lot of people, one of the basic prinicples of feminism is for women to be more and more like men, without thinking about what men are in the first place.

Women are sold this idea that to be like men and to do the things that men do obligatorily means achieving something automatically of value, good, and desirable, simply because men had possession of it traditionally.

This way of thinking neglects an examination of much more problematic core dynamics of a particular society, which are irrespective of gender.

Underlying problems with such core dynamics are often camouflaged under gender discriminition. Many women think that behaving more and more like men means they "have made it." Nothing could be more shortsighted.

Examples include, but are certainly not limited to, women becoming workaholics, women consuming large amounts of alcohol and binge drinking (behaving more and more *like men*), swearing (talking more and more *like men*), consuming pornography (and thinking about sexuality more and more *like men*), having a perverse and perverted sexuality, taking testosterone to cheat at sports, being highly promiscuous because of an inability to form sustainable personal relationships, being white collar criminals, corrupt politicians, etc.

"Equality will set you free" is such a wonderful play on the original "Arbeit Mach Frei" in this context. Animal Farm comes to mind too.

While this doesn't exactly relate to the "Imagine" series, this makes me really mad:

The people behind "Cooking Mama" and "Gardening Mama" have created a new game called "Science Papa." As a science-loving, Nintendo DS-playing woman, I might have been in the market for "Science Mama," but there is no way I will buy a game that perpetuates these gender stereotypes.

As an aside, the description touts that you can sabotage your opponents experiments to "win." That doesn't sound like good science to me.

@Mina: and besides, that’s not the damn point.
=============
I guess I got a lot of other points, except the "damn" one.

@Mina: Oh, and Jack Thompson is a nutcase. He’s on the losing side of these battles for a reason. The idea that gaming promotes violence is unproven, ridiculous, and outdated. Gaming is a form of entertainment, like reading, board games, television, and movies. Nothing more.
=============
I am glad that no cultural product promotes violence. This means that the millions of messages spewed out every day promoting violence have no effect on anyone's mind or behavior. Relief. Just as when people see millions of sexist or racist messages, it also never impacts anyone's minds or behavior. Uh huh.

According to your view that gaming is just like television, why restrict violent games to adults only? If children watch a million violent scenes and actions on TV everyday as it is, why not let them enjoy imagining it all in games? Why the censorship? As you said, it's all just "entertainment."

And, since there is a "Cop Killer" game, if someone wanted to release a "President Killer - Obama Special Edition" game, would you be against it? Wouldn't this be great for adults and children?

Besides, if messages don't impact human behavior, every human behavior must be the result of some inborn determination or gene, right?

Jack Thompson seems a lot saner to me than the industry which puts out a lot of these games. What a sad commentary for society that a man who tries to take action against socializing people to hate and kill is deemed to be a complete lunatic.

Ooooh.
What I would have done for "Imagine: Architect" or "Imagine: Engineer"!

I don't remember ever begging for a doll, but how I yearned for Legos. I could never have enough, because I wasn't into building little scenes or whatever. No, I tried to build actual functional objects, and they almost always involved trying to bridge a span or support weight. My greatest Lego triumph was a little chair I made that I could actually sit on!

I don't know. Male gamers are, on average, some of the most maliciously sexist people around, which isn't surprising, given how hardcoded sexism is into most video games. Video games are designed to be male fantasies, and that means viewing women as digital sex puppets or killing them. Or both, as in the case of Metal Gear Solid 4, where the camera sticks itself literally between your mother's breasts as she takes her last dying breath. Yes, you look at your mom's boobs as she dies. It's f'ing sinister.

The people that make these games are about as willfully ignorant and hateful as it gets. They have made it clear that they don't want women playing games because they don't want to have to change the sexism. They see it as their territory. Imagine is probably just making a quick buck with these games, but they're making them because no one else in the video game industry will make games for girls where they aren't excluded or degraded.
