i think that what Rachel was saying is that the connection of desegregation to ‘communism’ was arbitrary and that if fascism had been the threat of the moment then it’s that, that would have been used to demonise the idea of racial equality. it was an ironic remark.

I’m not sure how you’d make the logical leap from desegregation to Hitler, whose politics were all about segregation taken to an extreme. (I mean, not that comparing desegregation to communism makes a whole lot more sense.)

When this photo was taken, wouldn’t communism be more fresh in peoples’ minds as the red scare was happening at the time? Or maybe it’s more of a distance thing… The Holocaust happened to “us,” or in places “we” traced our ancestry back to, but communism was something that “they” do over “there.” I guess at the time this photo was taken, communism was actually a very immediate, very real (seeming?) threat. (I’d argue that nuclear proliferation/the arms race/international tension was more of a threat than the fact of communism itself.)

Yes, who knows. This image only demonstrates that communism is so demonised concept in USA that you can add almost any issue with it and the thing becomes EVIL automatically. Similarly as “socialism” is treated today as in USA when it comes to public healthcare or what not. So yes, in a sense this could be the tea party yank crowd. Nothing has really changed in the manner of these things, only the issues.
