"the use of taxes to pay for government provided health care would not necessarily cost those who are already insured and may actually save them money."

HA HA HA... LOL..... yeah, paying for 40 million uninsured won't cost us a thing!!

Here's a good example of what happens when health products are sold on the free market. More breast cancer, yay!

1) You don't think the state pays for bankruptcy or disability, research or your grandma for that matter?

2) Health care could not be a commodity in a single payer system. It isn't marketed and its use value is not inflated. And to be a commodity, its price has to be determined by the market.

3)Treatments have not been expanded at nearly the same rate that health care costs, the amount of uninsured, and the amount of bankruptcy due to health care have increased. If that were true, that would be really pathetic since health outcomes have only gotten worse. We have the same infant mortality rate as Brazil.

Regardless of whether you're healthy, the treatments being covered are constantly expanding as more are developed.

Heath care is a commodity regardless of what anyone does about it. Having the state pay for it doesn't change the fact that, like all wealth, it still takes time, labor, and capital to deliver; it just makes it a commodity which the state pays for.

I have a feeling the map might be adjusted for population. On;y there is no way to find out because the link only goes to the map,not any site where it is talked about, and there is very little info on the map. Am I that naive to think they would be smarter than that?

I am also quite sure that less people were dying from lack of care ten years ago than they are today.

Actually that is not true. It would only be true if everyone that bought health insurance were sick, and that the amount of health insurance people buy is correlated with the amount of health care we use.

If I spend 2000 per year on health insurance through my company (most companies also have an insurance mandate)and I don't get sick, why would I have been dead ten years ago?

Health care and technology has also not changed that much in ten years.

I can tell you, having had it happen at every job. My health care use has not changed, but every company is increasing the employee percentage every year. With raises, I usually broke even. And I am healthy.

And as far as as using more as we get wealthier, that only happens when health is commodified.

It is not necessarily a problem that percentage spent on health care is increasing, because there is just so much more health care to buy. Many of the people being bankrupted by medical bills today would simply have died even a decade ago.

That sort of thing happens all the time in history, as when the percentage of the economy consisting of manufacturing increased compared to agriculture even as agricultural output increased, or the percentage consisting of services increases even as industrial output continues to rise.

As a civilization becomes wealthier, one would expect health care to occupy an increasingly large percentage of consumption, since there is no rational upper limit to the amount and quality that could be consumed until everyone is completely ageless, for which we have a ways to go.

Agreed -- this map is essentially useless, as the colors just mirror the total population of the various states. If there is interesting variations in the percentage of uninsured across the states, there needs to be a per capita map made.

Gotta say I think the graph is a little bit mis-representative, because it doesn't adjust for population density. Of course California, Illinois, NY, and Florida have higher numbers of uninsured people than Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas--the population in those states is much, much higher. Percentages or ratios would have been much more telling here. In this form it reads, with a few exceptions, like a population chart.
