I have never commented on here, and I'm nervous, but I have a thought: the sexualization of violence/corpses is, in actuality, the sexualization of passivity. Women are consistently depicted as passively "sexy" rather than actively "sexual." An image of a woman who wants sex, is seeking sex or truly enjoys sex would be threatening and alienating to our gender binary. Men are the agents of sexual pleasure. The seekers of coitus. These images reinforce our ideology that sex is something that men DO TO women. The more passive women are, the less pressure there is on men to pleasure them (ignoring the fact that sex is, of course, a joint effort and that women, of course, enjoy it).

Unsurprising given that Hustler once tried to get rights to use crime scene photos of a murdered hiker to sexify them. I think she was actually decapitated. Thankfully they were denied.

I think part of the reason there's no backlash against the Palmer book is because (a) it is her _own_ initiative and her _own_ project - and as an art project, it has more freedom in this context, and (b) the Palmer-Gaiman combo are known to be fans of the macabre (like the poster above me also mentioned), so if anything, I think this would be seen as related to that.

I notice you have absolutely no mention of the texts that accompany the pictures. Why is that?
