In response to the female web-browser comparison, I give you this:
http://community.livejournal.com/mac_hearts_pc/
Turning computers/web-browsers/electronics, and so on into people isn't something that only happens with women. I wonder, though, if men are chosen to represent this because the women who write the fiction don't have another outlet? Female-gaze?
Just thought I'd throw the link into the air, anyway.

A few more examples of the assumption that the only audience for anything remotely "tech" related is male (and hates women):

Chris Cunningham is not a comedian or a satirist, he's a filmmaker. So yeah, he often uncritically portrays things. Fortuantely, in my opinion, because the world is full of cheap parodists, and visionaries like Cunningham are very rare.

There's too much here to respond to, and I have to get back to my contract gigs. But I'll pick some of this out to respond to it. A painting on a screen is coarse pixels, but what happens when the pixels are the medium? Is Rick Berry less of an artist because he paints digitally? Is Dave McKean? Is Robert Rodriguez less of a filmmaker because he uses digital techniques and not actual filmstock? Film is "coarse" as well. Film was treated with hostility as an artistic medium in its infancy.

"Watching" an electronic screen is not much different than "watching" a film, or "watching" a printed page. When you dig deep into a novel, you get to...what? language. Abstractions called letters that we use to make language. That's different from ones and zeros how? I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that games are passive entertainment, but more traditional forms of art are not? The very definition of a game, be it a board game, a game of charades, or a computer game, is interactivity. Games are just serious of instructions. Made by human beings for other human beings to have fun. Try to remember that, and try not to let your prejudices get in the way of the fact that people who make games are every bit as passionate, smart, and sincere as a novelist, poet, dancer, painter, or musician. The art is in the play, not just in the watching or the reading.

As someone who has been making art since I was old enough to hold crayons, all art is constrained by the medium. Medium informs art. It always has. Paintings are constrained by the canvas. Songs are constrained by length, recording techniques. It wasn't too many years ago that the Beatles popularized multitrack recording. We take recorded music for granted, but modern recording techniques are quite young. Not much older than video games! Now bands are using every digital tool at their disposal to make things that have never been heard before. You can be hostile to new mediums, or you can be interested in what they have to say.

And I don't have to leave my computer off when lighting strikes because I have a laptop with a 6 hour battery, and a spare. I recommend them highly. 8-)

They are interesting in various ways, sure. But the blog post implies that they're all in the same realm of damaging media, because they're all right next to each other in the same post, and you lead with the scariest and most nasty stuff, and end with games that (IMHO) aren't sexist in the slightest.

I guess as someone who's been playing video games for a good 25 years, on God knows how many different systems ( at least 20!) I'm wondering why you didn't pick and choose from the gazillion real and egregious examples of sexism in the gaming industry, rather than picking on a tiny indie dev that isn't sexist in any way, shape or form.

And yeah, it's just a blog, but a blog got Dan Rather fired. ;-)

Interestingly, judging by the music and a couple of the shots in it, that Independent Erotic Animation Festival video appears to be a riff on Aphex Twin's "Windowlicker" video, which is itself a parody (though unfortunately one of those "parodies" that spends a lot of time uncritically portraying the thing it purports to criticize).

All your blog are belong to us! :)

Seriously, after looking back over all this when my last monstrosity posted, I had kind of an 'uh-oh' moment. As in "Uh-oh, this isn't my blog, and that was a bit much."

I hope you or any other admin of this blog wouldn't hesitate to post a STFU notice should you deem it appropriate. I'm actually quite confident that you wouldn't, and the fact that you haven't I guess maybe means someone somewhere is being mildly amused by it all? [insert sheepish grin here] Either way, no more gargantuan tirades will come from me, I swear.

Ok, the generalization about playing with themselves should've been more pointedly aimed than it was; it's a consequence of trying to write in a sea of distractions and should've been phrased differently, no offense to gamers in general intended. I'm interested in the point at which gaming becomes a problem, not gaming per se. If I had time to proofread, edit, and rewrite then it would've worked a lot better, but there we are.

And really, the generalizations in that post were intended more as a friendly poke at Shodan for the little poke at me about there being a stick up my butt (made shortly before trying to one-up me on the maturity thing, lol). It was stereotyping someone who points out some possible downsides to playing games all the time as being uptight, etc. so I responded in kind but I got two topics mixed together that should've been kept separate. My bad. Ah well, excrement occurs.

I did stop and wonder a bit when I read this, though:
I feel like you’re setting up a weird kind of naturalism where the closer to nature one lives, the better.

What exactly do you think "nature" is? Or rather, where?

And do you really disagree that electronic media are not uncannily similar to recreational drugs? (denial is the first sign of a problem, you know) I would assume you've read some Marshall McLuhan or Jerry Mander if you have an interest in analyzing this subject, but if not you'll find them quite interesting. Also, the biochemistry of thought and emotion adds an interesting angle which could be interpreted as emotions themselves being merely endogenously-produced drugs. If our thoughts and emotions are drugs, I'd say external stimuli must be too since in order to be consciously perceived they must be converted into electrochemical signals that are indistinguishable from endogenous ones. And some drugs/thoughts/emotions have more side effects than others, that's all.

And finally, are there real, tangible chainmail thongs available? Because if so, I know someone who'd love one and who I'd love to see in one (sans webcam, of course ;) ).
