I'm just making a guess here: I've noticed that Linux users/developers communities are quite women-friendly; although there are less girls than guys there, those who are are appreciated and treated as equals. I think there are significant differences between open-source software culture and proprietary-software culture, as the latter is a lot more affected by advertising/marketing, and therefore by stereotyping

Love Systems is worth checking out - it's not the same thing as that VH-1 show. It's helped a lot of people, men and women.

Regarding that "creators of technology" v. "users of technology" thing, have a look at: http://www.backupbrain.com/2009_07_19_archive.html#a005220

It's totally true. To inflate the numbers of "women in tech" women *around* (not in) tech are often included. It's like saying someone who wrote a review of a concert they attended or CD they bought in the local paper is "in the music industry."

Ok, usually i agree with most of what i see here, but i searhed multiple sites that offer images and I had to search long and hard before I came up with a female scientist image like the one above. Lets not invent facts to suit our own agendas. If you search female geek the results are different but female scientist produces results that are very respectable.
