Macon D,

See: <a href="http://www.holah.karoo.net/tajfestudy.htm" rel="nofollow">Tajfel H., (1970) Experiments in Intergroup Discrimination</a>

The "groups" that Tajfel created were even more arbitrary than "white", "male", and "heterosexual". They were "over-estimator" and "under-estimators" of numbers of dots, or preference for Klee or Kandinsky paintings. However, the participants were actually assigned to these groups randomly, so they did not have any previous identity of being over/underestimators or previous identity of liking Klee/Kandinsky.

Compared to these randomly-assigned categories, the categories "white", "male", and "heterosexual" are relatively blatant and have been constantly reinforced throughout the individual's lifetime.

Interesting, and convincing, but of course, it gets more sticky with majority categories. Like, white folks, and men, and heterosexuals. In many situations and/or contexts, the members are both aware and unaware that they're members of the group. So much of what constitutes the group solidarity and all that goes with it is assumed, universalized, naturalized, and so on.

How does social psychological research account for this phenomenon?
