I know this post is ancient, but the racial dynamics in this ad struck me, so I thought I should chime in.

To me, it seems telling that the hot chick this guy can finally get is both white and thin--this being the ideal for black [hetero] men, maybe? Like, while the chubby loser smoker black guys are getting black and fat women, this cool non-smoker black guy is getting a white and thin woman. I mean, considering that couples perceived as "the same" race are often the default in visual media, is this supposed to be a "racial upgrade" for the guy?

Except that, looking at the ad again, it seems to be marketed at the female side or at least at people attracted to men. I'm too tired to make sense of this whole thing.

I was thinking about this the other day: Smoking would seem to limit your dating pool. On dating websites (and more traditional dating classifieds), there's always a field to select whether and how often you smoke, and as a non-smoker I would be very reluctant to date a heavy smoker, or even a more occasional one. I imagine many others would also consider smoking a deal-breaker, even though smokers may also find other smokers more attractive than non-smokers as well, but, I'd venture, not to a fully reciprocal extent.

"...the only message that has any chance of penetrating to these guys may be, “No, smoking will not get you laid, in fact, your odds are better if you don’t smoke.” Sad, certainly, and its a bit of robbing peter to pay paul since we will later have to deprogram the sexist messages, so I’m not convinced these campaigners are doing anyone a service, but I think we can discern the underlying rationale in reprogramming non-smoking as the sexier look….."

So, as a fat person, how long will I have to wait until we decide that it's time to *subsequently* 'deprogram' the sizist message reinforced and normalized by this ad? Because I'd like to know when I can begin looking for a mate who will find me attractive, a job opening where my weight will not work against me, an insurance policy that won't reject me...

Explicitly equating a lack of visible body fat with "the sexier look" is also one of the main problems here.

So, now, just to make sure I get it right, if and when I get a girl looking like that to take off my shirt, and she finds out that my abs are somewhat less easy to discover (without a scalpel, that is), would she be totally fine with it if I explain that THIS fat belly is NOT caused by smoking but rather by my excessive eating?
Cause this is really an important thing to know, and I wish this sort of educational information was disseminated more widely amongst the fat male community. I think it will have a very positive influence.

Quoting Dr. Runte: So…although we might wish to educate people about health risks, the truth is most of these consumers already know and are not making the rational decision, but the emotional one.

Rational is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to the nature of the various sources of pleasure people seek. Deciding what's in our best interest is tricky for mortal beings since the idea that we could find ourselves dead from a million random causes on any given day tends to make hedonism in general sound entirely rational.

I've known smokers who were very fatalistic that way; they got pleasure from smoking and said things like "One-hundred percent of vegans and joggers die!"Technically, they're right. I might be able to come up with a thousand alternatives commonly seen as "better" than smoking that are even more pleasurable (such as sex involving ice cubes), but if someone chooses to smoke instead well then as they say, there's no accounting for taste.

A friend once told me in no uncertain terms that she wanted to live as hard and as fast as she could, and didn't give a damn about old age because she wasn't going to see it anyway. She made it to 27, but at least she did exactly what she wanted to while she was alive.

It's an inconceivable mindset to many people, but she was well educated (we met in college) and very smart and consciously made her decision (to live a high-risk life, not to die young). Thoreau may have been a part of it since she did bring up that "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation" quote a lot. Sometimes I see her point, sometimes I don't.

Of course, the fact that nicotine withdrawal causes physical stress, anxiety, and irritability and that smoking a cigarette causes those symptoms to disappear implies that a free choice is not necessarily what's being made here, although initially it was. Hmm, so smoking the first cigarette was a free choice unless the eternal pro-smoking propaganda blitz took that away, too. And yet, smoker's rights groups tell us our bodies are our own to do with as we will, but apparently our minds are still up for grabs.

It's a strange, subtle, and fascinating topic (to me anyway).

I'm wondering why nobody has mentioned the interacial nature and how come we rarely see black female - white male couples in advertising but the other way round actually pops up once in a while.

I'm guessing these ads are the result of focus group research where they asked otherwise rational males why they decided to smoke, knowing full well the health risks. I would suspect that for many males, aside from the actual drug effect, the biggest reason is that smoking has been portrayed as cool and manly. 70 years of advertizing and product placement in movies/medis has ensured that every male pictures the adventurous hero with a cigarette in hand. So...although we might wish to educate people about health risks, the truth is most of these consumers already know and are not making the rational decision, but the emotional one. Much as we might like to insist on all social marketing to take the high road, any educator knows you have to start where the students/audiences are at -- and the only message that has any chance of penetrating to these guys may be, "No, smoking will not get you laid, in fact, your odds are better if you don't smoke." Sad, certainly, and its a bit of robbing peter to pay paul since we will later have to deprogram the sexist messages, so I'm not convinced these campaigners are doing anyone a service, but I think we can discern the underlying rationale in reprogramming non-smoking as the sexier look.....

This is disgusting.
You have a great cause: trying to influence people to quit smoking.
This cause should be accomplished by: Educating people on the actual, life-threatening dangers of smoking, both to themselves and those who spend a lot of time around them.
And they're going all sexist/fattist/PETA on it? Gods, the idiocy. :(

The sexism and fatphobia here are appalling.
Also -- "belly fat caused from smoking"? Smoking tends to *reduce* body weight; the huge decrease in smoking rates is theorized to be one of the factors behind the (small) average increase in body weights over the last several decades.
