Personally, yes, this advertisement is weird. I don’t think women should feel as though they have to go to extremes to look young. However, this is how products are sold. They are extreme in their advertisements. It is a shame that the media does this, but today, I feel it is even worse. I mean, I have seen worse advertisements for women today, than this. Although youth is geared towards women more frequently, it happens to men, too. While the photograph may be creepy to some, I look at it through an artist’s point of view. Perhaps this is what the photographer and company wanted to convey for the product. This advertisement is actually tame compared to what they have today. Women shouldn’t be conveyed in the same, old-fashioned sexist ways but sexism is always going to find its way into society.

I also have a serious problem with the “Mrs. John Marino” part of the ad. She has no identity outside of her husband? I still see people do this today and it is as annoying now as it was back when this ad appeared.

Even if I could put aside the obvious message that women aren’t supposed to age, I can’t get past the creepy idea of competing with a) her own daughter and b) a child. Ick.

I know I’m preaching to the choir, but I find it sad that this type of shit still goes on. from shaving every hair on our bodies to “anti-aging” creams to botox–why can’t it be socially acceptable to allow women to age?
