There maybe nothing wrong with creating people who don’t actually exist, but one of the troubles with Photoshop is that it makes images of people who seem like the /could/ exist but who actually don't. It is the verisimilitude of Photoshop creations that help distort our ideals. If we pushes the alterations much further then nobody would take them as realistic records of actual human beings.

While I don't want to argue about the significance of Photoshopping pictures in today's world, etc. etc. etc., this clip is less dramatic than it's made to look. At first glance it might look like the magic of Photoshop is used to transform Merkel into Paris Hilton, but what has really been done is a picture of Hilton has been painted over a picture of Merkel. I don't think it can be classified as "retouching" if you could repeat the exact motions from the video without the Merkel picture and end up with the same result.

The normal designation in English for someone who does this job is “Chancellor” regardless of the sex of the person.

It used to be Bundeskanzler in German, too, but they created a feminine form when Ms. Merkel won the elections. Nowadays here in Spain we're used to "presidenta" (woman president), "ministra" (woman minister) and "alcaldesa" (woman town major), even if all of them looked like linguistic aberrations a few years ago.

Also, I was half-joking.

re "Chancelloress": There is no reason to invent English feminine forms (or revive long-archaic ones) because one is translating from a gendered language, just as there is no need to capitalise all nouns when translating from German to English. The normal designation in English for someone who does this job is "Chancellor" regardless of the sex of the person. Only a stilted translation would use a bizarre or selfconscious term in the target language to translate a term that is normal in the source language (except when such a term doesn't exist in the target language, which happens frequently but is not happening here).

IMO it should be Chancelloress to reflect the use of Bundeskanzlerin in the original, but whatever :D

Too bad they aren't going to sell the Merkel Barbie. It may not be all that much different in terms of appearance from the regular old Barbie, but a least this version of Barbie is a former physicist and current world leader and not a fictional character merely trying to look good for Ken and wanting a Dream Kitchen (only $20 at Amazon!).

A play set that includes a Merkel doll, a Bush doll, and a spring-loaded chair would be hilarious.
