The always-awesome Brady P. sent me a link to Edward James Olmos, better know to many of you as Admiral Adama, speaking on the non-existence of distinct “races” at the United Nations recently:

I could justify this by saying, as Brady did, that “it’s an interesting example of the political and pop-cultural coming together,” which it is. I could talk about the way that “Battlestar Galactica” shows that pop culture can take on politics, social issues, and so on in meaningful, complex ways that don’t just rely on easy moralizing and good/evil dichotomies. And Olmos’s comments are quite accurate, in that race was invented and doesn’t exist biologically.

But here’s the thing: really I’m just using those things as the flimsiest of excuses to pay homage to the best TV show ever, the last episode of which airs tonight. If you are not spending this entire day going “OMG OMG, what is Starbuck? What is up with her brand-new Viper?!? And what exact form is Chief’s oncoming total flip-out gonna take?”, then you and I are just different kinds of people. Which is fine. The world needs people like you, too.

Oh and: See also Tim Wise’s captivating discussion of the invention of the white race here.  And here’s the Secretary/Treasurer of the AFL-CIO saying it’s time to quit it already.
