There is much more difference than simple time served (a la bluebetty). Although time length served does differ, it is much more.
Jail is what is in your town, usually by the courthouse. It is much more demographically different than a prison and is used for processing and exporting more severe offenders to prison else where. Types of offenders are literally every type since it's a (potential) mediator for being sent to a prison as well as a holding tank for the typical possession and DUI cases.Prison is similar, yet different. There are fewer prisons than jails and they are much bigger. Depending on the type (i.e. maximum security vs. men's/women's colony) it can be much more harsh or much less. Most likely you are in a prison because you have multiple offenses, a more severe offense, or a felon. The most significant difference that I find is the tendency to run it like a business, found in prisons much more often than jails. Prisons these days have truly become part of the big business commodification of individuals. They keep sucking in money while ever continuing with typical punishment measures that do nothing to rehabilitate the individuals committed. Just be sure to never make the mistake that many do in assuming that it's all the same and they're murderers. Many do, and there is much difference.

the diffference between jail and prison is primarily the time length. Jail is for those waiting for sentencing and sentences up to one year. In prison, someone has already been sentenced, is through with court dates and will serve a set time length.
