but what we see in our media is often a symptom of the societal disease. what you may see as merely kids advertising clothing and accessories in imitation of various celebrities, others see as lowkey proof of adultification among young people of color. may not be what you think, but it is a real issue that deserves attention.

I'm the overprotective mom of a 9 year old, and when I first saw these pictures the only thing that came to my mind was "kids dressed up as pop stars like beyonce and jay-z."
Honestly, I'm more offended by the idea of kids that age listening to the lyrics in that type of music than I am by the dress-up fantasy images.

Raluca, if you come back to this, I'm curious in what way you'd apply it here. I'm not questioning your use of it - but my undergrad work was based on labeling theory, and I know it to be a really broad topic with lots of applications.

There's a Foot Action in my nearest mall-- which is in a decidedly non-white area, with an overwhelmingly white clientele. So are you telling me that if I go there, I'll see ads like this featuring white (sorry, "non-urban") children? Because that's what the people who shop there look like? I honestly don't know, but somehow I doubt it.

Other than child-pageant type stuff (which is also unsettling), I don't think I've ever seen white children adulted-up like this. Especially not boys.

I'm trying to think what the white pop-cultural equivalents of the Li'l Jon and Beyonce tropes (crass new-rich fool; high-maintenance babe) might be. I don't know... Steve-O and Posh, maybe?
Can you imagine ads like that?
More to the point, have you seen ads like that?
