When discussing the effects of residential segregation by race and class, I often discuss the way in which such segregation allows for targeted marketing. Next time you drive through an impoverished neighborhood, look at see what is being advertised. If research holds, you’ll see disproportionate marketing for cigarettes, alcohol, and junk food.
