Jonah O. sent in this ad for the job-hunting site TheLadders.com (he read about it in a story about worst ads ever on Slate). The site says it is for “only $100k+ jobs and only $100k+ people.”
So…there are people out there who just are “$100k+ people.” You don’t get to be one of those people by simply, you know, getting a job that pays that much. It’s not that you get paid $100k+. It’s that you, yourself, are a $100k+ person.
Might be great for a discussion of cultural beliefs in meritocracy and wealth–the idea here that people who make beyond a certain amount of money are unique in ways other than being wealthy and should inhabit a separate sphere from the masses of non-$100k+ people. I mean, if you talk about motivation or skills or whatever, those are things people making less than $100k might have, and those things might make them perfectly qualified for some jobs that pay that much. But if you just have to be a $100k+ person, there’s no room for anybody else in that club.
I also like the way that non-$100k+ people are represented as sweaty, overweight schlubs who just get in the way of people who actually know what they’re doing…while playing tennis, a sport generally associated with the wealthy.
I looked around the website a bit to see what you have to do to prove you’re a $100k+ person, but I didn’t immediately see any requirements/guidelines and got too bored to keep looking.
Thanks, Jonah–awesome find!
