Also, Michael Phelps’ body has a high recovery rate, even for a man. I heard somewhere (don’t quote me on this) that he is not affected by lactic acid like most people.

muscle mass/body fat % of women and men are different. if men have more muscle, being more lax in diet is possible.

It seems like there has to be some happy medium here. I mean, Phelps seems to eat a ton of crap. And Ziegler…well, “real oats” not “fake oats”? Seriously.

Mr. Reese: Kate Ziegler is also an Olympic swimmer. She is NOT out of shape by any stretch of the imagination.

You guys also have to put into consideration that phelps obviously does a more rigorous work out than that other chick, it doesnt really matter how many calories you consume as long as you can burn them off. I dont want to sound like a prick but that chick who was eating healthy looks really out of shape..

MMM, you refer to these as “commercials”. They do not seem to be. The Phelps one appears to be a featurette about the upcoming Olympics and the other seems to be a clip from a documentary of some kind (it has the Saturn logo on it , are they a sponsor of Kate Zielgler?)

Since the two clips are not produced by the same film maker, they really can’t be compared. The differences could be just as much about the style of the director than about they way the subjects are portrayed.

Further, it seems that their coaches take different views of nutrition and how to eat. One would have to look at whether the coaches coach both their male and female swimmers in the same manner. Also, it doesn’t appear that Kate’s nutritionist is very concerned about the amount Kate eats, but more about the organic nature of it. Again, that is simply opinion of a nutritionist and not biased film making.

There’s also the celebration of Phelps’ eating out and lack of culinary skill (or interest), while Ziegler seems to feel obligated to cook for herself, at home, alone–no banquet-every-night atmosphere for her. Looks pretty dreary, in fact. I’d be curious if this is the case for other high-performance women athletes.

I agree with MMM. The Phelps piece has a stimulating, speedy, and kinda fast, macho feel to it, whereas Ziegler is portrayed in a more calm, gentle manner. All those shots of the fried foods Phelps loved was actually disgusting, by most American weight obsession standards. And as soon as the first comment was made on his eating habits (by the woman of the restaurant who happily said, “He eats a lot”), you automatically know the commercial is celebrating a man. I mean you would never hear that being proudly said about a woman.

The speed at which these two commercials is also distinctly different. Phelps’ is face paced with lots of cuts to his swimming and winning. Ziegler’s is slower, moderate, with little (or no?) cuts to her swimming and winning.

So I guess if you eat all the time, eat fast, and support local eateries you’re a winner but if you eat healthy and moderately you’re not a winner. Well, according to these commercials anyways.
