Chris--I tried to find evidence that it was a hoax/parody when it was sent in but I couldn't find anything, although that doesn't mean it's not. I was sort of doubtful too. I just added a disclaimer to the post that, though I have no evidence that it's NOT a real ad, there are reasons to think it's not, although the gender message would still be interesting for a discussion. I should have thought to put it up with the original post, I just blanked and didn't think of it.

It's interesting that the clip is so self-consciously "retro"; the whole vibe, from the clothing to the car (even the movie theater she is standing in front of), feels like its meant to allude to a kind of happy days/lovers lane/idealized 1950's type wholesome America kind of sexuality. Perhaps to heighten "the horror, the horror!" of discovering that gender walls are permeable.

I love your blog; but this strikes me as an ironic slip in a blog that does much to point out internalized sexism in our culture:

"This might have something to do with the fact that men punish each other for crossing the gender line much more than girls punish each other (or than girls punish men, for that matter)."

"Girls" and "Men" aren't parallel. . . .
