I dont see how anyone can confuse either the animal “rights” agenda or the made in America agenda while at the least the clothing industry is cloaked (no pun intended) by the Advertising Industry standard which has always been Sex Sells
And how on earth can anyone over 30 still be a Liberal and speak of anything Leftist in intellectual terms. “Balkanization” cut me a break – that is akin to “gentrification” Call it what it is — Growing old!!! Both the gentry and Liberals!!

Speaking of leftist Balkanization; as a heavier woman, I am so sick and tired of funky-import stores, or our-clothes-are-organic and eco-friendly clothes stores; because while the clothes they sell may be fairly traded, made by artisans by hand as a cottage industry in impoverished countries, organic and low-impact, they are even worse than clothes stores in general, in that only exercise-anorexic gym bunnies could wear them. There have been a couple of items of clothes in such stores that noone I can imagine could wear – because the only female I know with a torso circumference that small is my 9 year old niece – and she doesn’t have anything to fill out the top of the dress.

Yes and in my experience they don’t have many clothes for plus-sized women, either – I’m roughly in the ballpark of 20-22 in size… I buy my leggings there, but only because I use my leggings as “longjohns” and not outerwear; they’re stretchy, I’m buying the largest available size, and it only goes *under* my gut and shows butt cleavage. But since I’m just using them as thermal layering I don’t care :)

To be more specific, they only photograph models the founder in particular thinks are sexy, and he art-directs all the shoots.

He actually sleeps with a fairly large percentage of the models (most of whom, before their photoshoots, were his employees, either as retail sales associates or seamstresses).

It’s really creepy on a whole lot of levels, especially how young they are (and how much younger he art-directs them to LOOK).

Agreed! I’ve noticed that American Apparel models are surprisingly varied and natural; one ad I saw recently featured a beautiful young woman with a distinctly hairy upper lip.

However, they do have a fetish for thin women. I’m on the threshold of plus-sized (I usually wear a size 10-12), and I have never set foot one of their stores. All the images of hyper-thin women make me feel so unwelcome–even more so than I do at most such stores.
