Since Sociological Images is on a controversy kick, here’s another:
Last month Starbucks reintroduced its original logo for a few weeks of nostalgia, only to receive protests from a San Diego religious group called The Resistance. The group called for a boycott of Starbucks, saying that the image looked like “a naked woman with her legs spread like a prostitute” (according to the various news stories, for example, here). As far as I’ve been able to determine, Starbucks had only planned to use the image for a few weeks, did so, and let the controversy go the way of the logo.
Thanks to Miguel for the tip!
