No, it's me too.

Some people just become sensitive to this sort of thing. Not in a bad way, just that they are more aware of it. There are also people who make something out of nothing.

Maybe it's subliminal?

Either way it doesn't offend me or make me think of sex and/or rape.

Would you think any different if it was a man in that position? And as for being a rape survivor, or knows and works with rape survivors, you are now attuned to look for things that may not even be there. If you are constantly dealing with rape, you are going to constantly SEE rape, whether it is there or not.

Just a thought. And as a rape survivor, I didn't see a target on this woman's groin, what I saw was a woman in the middle of bullseye, possible making a "snow angel" She is in winter clothing.

What would your thought process had been if she was lying completely in the middle of the bullseye? Maybe her chest falls in the middle of the target, would it then be a statement on how the chest of women is a target for sexual advances? Or what if it was her head?

Sick freak... Or maybe a rape survivor? Or someone who knows/works with rape survivors? And thus is extra-attuned to depictions of women's groins as "targets"?

I agree that they were probably innocently going for "snow angel" (especially given her non-"sexy" winter clothing) and just didn't think about the possible connotations. But it's a huge leap from that to saying anyone who DOES see something else is a "sick freak."

I agree. That is all I saw in the photo...I hate to sound mean, but I think you have to be some sick freak to think it has anything to do with rape... :/

Oddly, I don't think I would have noticed the connotations of this. I didn't even notice her crotch was in the center of the bullseye. That isn't to say that the outcry wasn't deserved, but it just didn't strike me as particularly sexist. I could be wrong, though.

I don't know... she seems pretty happy to be there. Some women LIKE to be a target, it doesn't (and shouldn't) have any connotations towards rape. Maybe she wants her crotch targetted - women want action too.

Here's the original post and context on Shaping Youth.org, and you can see by the 125+ comments, just about every angle and opinion has been covered from when I first wrote about it. http://www.shapingyouth.org/blog/?p=969

Ironically, it's now become a 'textbook case' in social media (not to mention a life lesson for me) because I now use it in media literacy sessions with teens for critical thinking skills, rotating imagery in 'would it have been different if...(fill in the blank) mode.

Needless to say, depending what you put in that target, the sociological implications elicit various responses and 'aha' moments.

Even if they did not 'mean to try to titillate the viewer with fantasies of rape', I think this ad tells us a lot about what their copywriter thinks is 'cool' and 'getting to people', and therefore - what is considered 'cool' and 'getting to people' in our culture. and drawing attention to this removes it from being so.
therefore, it does not matter much if it was a mistake.
