Gwen, I think class issues are a huge sociological topic. I come from a very poor working class family. My parents have not been able to contribute any finances to my academic career. I have had to work full-time all the way through my bachelors and masters in order to support myself and go to school (thus, it's taken me a long time to get those degrees). As I head into my doctoral program, I'm told that the class issues get even more extreme.

My classmates haven't understood why it's harder for me to participate in after class group meetings, or why I can't just ask for money to make ends meet. It's not that simple.

However, once I'm done, I will feel that I have paid my dues and that I really did earn by degrees...on many levels.
