Those scarves were hugely fashionable (for both men and women) here in the UK in 2007/2008, and I never read/heard one person making a scarf/terrorist link. I am in disbelief that this ever made the news!

Again, George makes the mistake I mention in my original post - equating what an individual can wear with what a donut company is trying to do through advertising.

Again - nobody cares what George wears.

"I’m stunned that there wasn’t a single person on the set that didn’t say “Umm, doesn’t that look exactly like the scarf Arafat used to wear?”"

That's because it isn't even a bloody keffiyeh! All this outcry betrays is shocking ignorance - it's paisley! Have you ever seen a Palestinian man wearing a paisley scarf? These are pretty old-school anyway, and associated with the PLO, Arafat and the intifadas.

Quick, check your wardrobes! Is there anything that could be construed as a Mao Jacket? A Sandinista Shirt?

If we wear the wrong clothes, the terrorists have won.

Ah, the dangers of accessorizing in the modern world. It's hard to see the mountains while we're busy tripping over anthills.

I just feel sorry for people who see extremist symbolism in donut ads. It must be a bleak existence. I don't recall Arafat's kaffiyeh having such adorable fringe, though everyone knew he loved his iced coffee as much as he hated shaving, so maybe it's the juxtaposition of the scarf and the coffee...

Besides, after all these years in business the fat and sugar content of Dunkin's donuts has probably caused more casualties than Arafat ever did (directly or indirectly), so I'm surprised the extremists aren't trying to distance themselves from the ad's implicit support of the random killer known as an unhealthy diet. What could be more extreme than slowly killing everybody?

Martyrs and infidels alike are struck down by the Great Satan's Donuts, after all. Perhaps they will become the common enemy that finally unites everyone? Or not, more likely...

I don't fully understand why they had to pull the ad. In that position I would have responded to complaints by saying "No, we don't support terrorism. Thanks for calling!"

I guess that's why I'm not a big shot in business, though.

When I was in advertising, this is exactly the type of mistake we tried to avoid. I'm stunned that there wasn't a single person on the set that didn't say "Umm, doesn't that look exactly like the scarf Arafat used to wear?" The problem with some on this site is that you equate what an advertiser is trying to accomplish with what an individual dressing themselves is trying to accomplish. Yes, everyone agrees that individuals have every right to dress anyway they wish, but if you are trying to sell donuts, why dress up your spokeswoman in a scarf that evokes memories of Yassir Arafat? It is just dumb advertising.

Implication: wearing monochrome scarves means you're a terrorist / a Muslim / a Jihadist / a Muslimist / an Islamist / an Iraqi / Barack Obama / not John McCain (underline where appropriate).

Anyone for Latte?

this would have been a really funny joke if only it wasn't true.
really, i think it's one of the most stupid things i've ever read about, it's on par with the "freedom fries" affair...
