Also, I just ran across this snippet from Foucault's Power/Knowledge (1980: 131), which sums up what Boltanski and Thévenot are getting at in a much more detailed, closely-argued way:

Each society has its regime of truth, its 'general politics' of truth: that is, the types of discourse which it accepts and makes function as true; the mechanisms and instances which enable one to distinguish 'true' and 'false' statements; the means by which each is sanctioned; and the techniques and procedures accorded value in the acquisition of truth; the status of those who are charged with saying what counts as true."

Which naturally reminds me of this.

Good catch, Jay!

"SPF 75—Slathering oneself in a good SPF 75 says something to the world. It says, 'I don’t mind spending a little extra if it means doing what’s right.'"

Reminds me of the classic L'Oreal ad with Cybill Shepard, with the immortal line that makes me want to hunt down the ad copywriter and make him or her copy out On Justification by hand on Egyptian papyrus scrolls using a quill pen:
"So if you want to feel all new and better, pull up your socks and say 'I'm worth it'."
